Like most teenagers during the summer, Sam, Danny and Tucker enjoyed going to the beach.

To a lesser extent, so did Jazz, who had agreed to drive them there and "supervise"; of course, that was quickly forgotten with the momentary cautions of Don't wander off! and NO GHOST FIGHTING!, and then Jazz was off to the marine biology museum with her notebook and trusty pink pen.

So they were left by themselves at the beach house to change. Sweet.

Except for the minute that Sam opened her backpack she could have sworn that tiny hearts erupted from it, along with a perfume so sickeningly sweet that she could have hurled.

"I. Am. Not. WEARING. THIS."

And so she grabbed her best friends' wrists, after closing her backpack ("Augh! The smell! How will I get it out?") and dragged them to the nearby swim shop. Then she deposited them on the benches while she went to go find something in something a little more dark.

Danny, clad in blue swim trunks and a t-shirt, dangled his sandaled feet over the edge of the bench, kicking them slightly, happily, his flip-flops occasionally flopping against the ground.

The group had opted for a longer drive this year, rather than just going up to the great lakes, and as such, they'd had to decided between the east coast and the west coast, since of the joys of living in the midwest was that they were completely landlocked and equidistant to both.

They chose the East coast, and headed over to New Jersey. At the moment, they were on the Ocean City boardwalk. They'd tried Atlantic City first but a local had informed them, "You go to Ocean City for fun, you come to Atlantic City for gambling and hookers."

So, to Ocean City, New Jersey they'd gone.

It was really nice, Danny thought. Sun and sand and the beaches were clean. It was a dry island so there weren't people getting drunk--mostly families and teenagers just having a good time. There were people playing volleyball on the beach and some throwing frisbees, kids building sand castles and sand pits, and lots of people just sunbathing and swimming.

Understandably, both Danny and Tucker liked the boardwalk the best. All along it were places to get food--cotton candy, boardwalk fries, ice cream, lemonade, salt water taffy, home-made fudge, pizza, funnel cake...

It smelled like a candy factory had been mixed with the nasty burger and exploded.

It was GREAT.

"You know, I don't see why it bothers her so much. I mean, yeah, it's a little pink--"

"A lot of pink," said Tucker.

"--a little frilly--"

"The frills will weigh her down and drown her."

"--but really, I bet it wouldn't look that bad."

At least it was a two piece. Two-piece = goood.

Danny froze and his sandal fell off his foot as he gaped, jaw hanging open.

Tucker just grinned and looked sidelong as his best friend. "You were saying?"

"Uhhhh..." Danny said stupidly.

Tucker looked from Danny to Sam, an eyebrow raised and a very amused expression on his face. "I think you broke Danny's brain. Does that count as okay?"

Danny stood and quickly shuffled his foot into his sandal.

"Earth to Danny, Earth to Danny, this is Tucker," Tucker said, waving a hand in front of Danny's face and Danny swatted it away with a grin.

Danny followed like he was being led on a string, trying very hard not to look at her behind, because then Tucker would tease him mercilessly.

Only he was busy staring at another random hot girl's behind so the coast was clear.

Commence staring.

"So, I was thinking, you guys wanna try to get surfing lessons?" Danny asked them both. "It'll be naked."

"--Neat! It'll be neat!" He went bright red and facepalmed.

"Actually, Sam, I think it's your bathing suit and I think it's getting to somewhere other than his brain," Tucker said jubilantly, and Danny elbowed him in the stomach.

Rental surfboards were soon procured and so were lessons. Their instructors' names were Kiki and Katie, two down-to-earth 25-year-old brunettes, the former of with had a South Jersey accent; the latter had a slight Southern drawl.

They were good teachers, fun, goofy, but matter-of-fact and good at explaining things.

Tucker liked them a whooole lot.

Danny was slightly disappointed that they didn't have a "Yooo, duuuude," surfer accents, although Kiki said "dude" a lot.

"Dude, Sam, niiice," she called out as Sam caught the last wave of the afternoon. She'd been the quickest learned of the three--naturally good at balancing and all.

"Balls. It looks like the waves are dying down for now," said Katie, holding a hand over her eyes and looking out as she sat on her board.

"Freakin' hell, this is the third day in a row it's gone this flat. For some reason the waves have been really strong during the night-tides and really weak during the daytime lately. S'been a bummer." Kiki checked her watch. "Although your time's just about up anyway, guys. Didja have fun?"

"Yeah. That was great!" Tucker declared, eyeing Kiki and Katie appreciatively. "Deeefinitely going to do this again tomorrow."

Danny struggled to climb back on his board, cheeks pink and looking breathless with exhiliration.

"That was almost as good as flying," he declared.

A sudden pause.

"Uh. On a plane. I like planes."

Both the surfing instructors laughed.

"Sure."

"That depends," Tucker said to Sam, and he turned and pointed to the two girls and said to them, "Where are you two going?"

"Tucker," Danny said with a roll of his eyes. "They're like, ten years older than us."

"Actually, I have a little sister about your age," Kiki said with a laugh. "She's on the boardwalk somewhere if you want to meet her."

"Oh, I will," Tucker said and he stayed out as Sam and Danny paddled in and brought their boards back to the rental place, chatting with the giggling and friendly girls.

"So, what are we doing? Since I don't think it includes flirting with surfer girls."

Danny flushed, then stepped forward, slightly awkward, put his hands on her waist and gaver her a kiss.
